AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT
The Airport has embarked on a major redevelopment programme which is split
into two distinct phases, to ensure successful growth.
Phase 1 projects are at various stages, the refurbishment of the current terminal including an extended Departure Lounge, relocation of the Check In facilities and the introduction of an Airside Coffee Shop has been completed as has the construction of a new carpark located adjacent to the terminal building.
Phase 1 projects that are still ongoing include a brand new rail Station, due to be completed September 2010, a brand new, state of the art control tower, due to be completed late 2010 and operation early 2011 and a brand new on site hotel due to be completed in early 2012 in time for the Olympics.
Phase 2 involves the building of an entirely new, resited terminal building and a runway extension. The latter, whilst modest in size, would allow the Airport to accommodate the new generation of medium capacity, high-efficiency jets being adopted by regional airlines operating scheduled flights and shorter range holiday charters. This development phase is at an advanced design stage with the aim to start work on both projects in September 2010 for completion by 2011 – prior to the 2012 Olympic Games. |
