COMMUNITY RELATIONS Please click here to download the Noise Action Pan which has been made available for consultation from 13th October 2009. Southend Airport, having once been the third busiest airport in the UK and where the famous Freddy Laker first started his flights, is fortunate to have a supportive community who would like to be able to fly to more destinations from their local airport, once again. Indeed, the airport is owned freehold by Southend Borough Council, on behalf of the community and has been leased to the airport company for 150 years on condition that it is operated and maintained as an airport. The community benefits through a share of profits and/or turnover from airport operations. Through the Airport Consultative Committee, which meets each quarter the airport maintains a close working relationship with representatives of all local authorities and some resident groups. Membership of the Consultative Committee includes representatives from all of the following authorities and organisations. Essex County Council Issues discussed include employment opportunities; training; new investment and environmental management together with recommendations for the airport company to consider and progress.
