New Railway Station on Track
New Railway Station on Track
Construction of the new railway station at Southend Airport has continued throughout the festive season ‐ including both Christmas and Boxing Day – and despite the snow, work is on schedule for completion by July 2010.
The £12 million project is being funded by Southend Airport and its owner, the Stobart Group.
It will be on the National Express East Anglia Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street line.
Major works completed to schedule over the Christmas period included new overhead gantries, which replaced previous structures. All the earthworks needed to facilitate the remaining construction work to get underway have also been successfully completed and approximately £4m (of the total budget) has been spent to date.
Laying the foundations for the platform and station building is now underway, as is enabling work to ensure that the new footbridge base is in place during February.
The railway station – along with the new air traffic control tower ‐ is another stage in Southend Airport’s investment and development programme to enhance the airport, providing the opportunity for local people to fly to a range of holiday and business destinations across Europe.
Southend airport’s Managing Director, Alastair Welch says "The airport development already has and will continue to create jobs and play a major part in helping to regenerate the area."
Southend‐on‐Sea Borough Council Development Control Committee will review the planning application for the development of Southend Airport at its meeting in January 2010.
