The Stobart Group

In December 2008, London Southend Airport was purchased by the Stobart Group.  The airport joined Stobart Rail, Stobart Developments and Stobart Ports as a major addition to the group best known for its Eddie Stobart distribution business.

Stobart is committed to the airport’s longer-term development plan and believes that it has the proven skills to deliver the vision for the airport. Straight away, Stobart opened discussions with a number of airlines to investigate opportunities for new passenger services from Southend Airport and progress is continuing.

About Stobart

Founded in the early 1970s, the Stobart Group is now a multi-modal logistics organisation serving the UK, Ireland and Europe. Alongside 1,850 trucks bearing the Eddie Stobart name, the company operates freight rail services, a port, and an inland freight terminal.  The group employs over 5,300 people at 40 sites across the UK.

The Stobart Group is split into four divisions. Southend Airport along with Carlisle Airport forms part of the new Stobart Air division, overseen by Alastair Welch.

The other divisions are:

Eddie Stobart

The main transport section of the company and the base on which the group is founded. Using the instantly recognisable Eddie Stobart vehicles, this division provides general distribution, chilled, and international haulage services and warehouses across the UK.

Stobart Ports

The Mersey Multimodal Gateway (3MG) project is a major container handling and storage facility at Widnes, Lancashire. The company is also investing heavily in the Mersey Gateway Port.

Stobart Rail

This division is a leading name in rail infrastructure maintenance, covering bridge replacement, earthworks, lineside infrastructure, geotechnical surveys and permanent works. Stobart Rail will deliver the new station for the airport.
